HEALTH: Top 200 Prescriptions

Friday, October 30th, 2009

I’ve recently posted the Top 200 U.S. Drug Prescriptions with links to
generic prescribing information at:

 <url: http://www.rxlist.com/top200.htm >

The monographs are also available by searching the main database which
contains over 4000 products.  Access is free.  These drugs represent
nearly 2/3 of the U.S. drug market (and about 7/10 searches to the
RxList database)

fluids & sodium

Friday, October 30th, 2009

I’m a 29 year old male with moderate aortic & mitral valve
regurgitation.  I follow the Ornish program (eat mostly whole grains,
beans, veggies, and fruit), consume no more that 1000mg sodium a day,
and limit my fluid intake.

1) Is it true that like fat, it is nearly impossible to get too little
sodium?
2) How would I know if I’m dehydrated? (Due to limited fluid intake)
3) Eating a very high fiber vegetarian diet what about constipation?

Although I am very strict with my sodium intake (most days its around
500mg)  I still start to retain fluids if I drink too much water.  Any
insight into these questions would br appreciated.

Donation of strip chart recorder sought

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Our district has just staggered back from the edge of bankruptcy (2.8
million dollar shortfall) and has less than no money to help me continue
to try to build up the biology program at my high school.

One highly-desireable component that would help me write a set of
physiology labs is any sort of strip chart recorder – a superceded EKG,
etc. – that is gathering dust in a hospital storeroom or a doctor’s
office. Also looking for one or more perfusion chambers that would allow
us to submerge excised tissue in saline at a constant temperature with
continuous O2 supply.

At present, we have literally no money to spend, although small amounts
might become available next year. Shipping costs would be borne
personally by me and possibly by the other biology teacher.

Anyone looking for a tax write-off?????

Thanks for reading this far!

PVC's and Fish

Friday, October 30th, 2009

As one who fights a constant battle with PVC’s (and Mitral Valve Prolapse and Atril Fib
twice) hopefully I can add some information that may be of some help to some of you.

I read an article titled "Fish May Prevent Rhythm Problems" in the March 1996 issue of
the Harvard Heart Letter (HHL)(800-829-9171) which talked about a study in Germany that
appeared in the American Journal of Cardiology (didn’t say which issue).  The study
tested 79 patients that had at least 2,000 VPC’s (ventricular premature contractions)in
a 24 hour period.  None had more than three VPC’s in a row or evidence of severe heart
damage.  "The volunteers were randomly assigned to receive 15ml (around 1 tablespoon) of
either fish oil (cod liver oil) or sunflower-seed oil each day.  After 16 weeks, the
patients’ heart rhythms were retested, and, for the fish oil group, the average number
of VPC’s during a 24-hour period fell from 6,937 to 3,591 – a 48% reduction.  The
frequency of VPC’s also declined among the subjects who consumed sun-flower oil, but
only by 25%.  A decrease in the number of VPCs of 70% or more occurred for 44% of those
who consumed fish oil, versus 15% of the subject who took sunflower oil."  The HHL goes
on to say that the data "suggest that fish oil might be a natural heart-rhythm drug.
Laboratory research indicates that fish oil might  "stabilize" heart rhythms by
influencing the flow of chemicals across the coverings of heart-muscle cells…".
Needless to say, even though I’m a vegitarian, I started eating fish, and it did help.

I was on a Prodigy bulletin board when I first read this article.  A fellow on the
bulletin board told me that he had a great reduction in PVC’s by crushing flax seeds in
a coffee grinder and sprinkling them on his cereal in the morning. He said it’s the
Omega 3 in the flax seed that helps the PVC’s.  I had trouble finding flax seeds but I
did find flax seed oil.  I take a tablespoon in the morning and another in the evening
and have had a dramatic reduction in PVC’s.  Generally, the only time I have trouble any
more is after I eat.  I have heard of many people who have trouble with PVC’s after
they eat but that discussion’s for another time.  Occasionally I will take 1/4 of a 50mg
Lopressor (which my doctor says isn’t enough to do any good, but it is, and I have heard
from others who only need 1/4) if the the PVC’s particularly give me trouble.  At this
time that may be a couple times a week.

In researching flax I found an article on the internet from the Envirnmental and
Preventive Health Center of Atlanta entitled "Essential Fatty Acids (EFA)-The Healing
Fats".  The EFA Omega 3 is high in flax seeds.  One sentence caught my eye, EFA’s "help
generate electrical currents that make out heart beat in orderly sequence".

Anyway, I hope this is some information that may help some of you if you would like to
give it a try.  The only thing I don’t like about the flax oil is that each tablespoon
of flax oil has 14 grams of fat and I have tried to keep my fat intake under 35 grams
per day.

Best Wishes,

Dave

guys, guys, I am a lurker & hate to spoil that record, but escalating

What would Mike Callahan say?  There might be smeone in the place who
