Fasting period for Blood Test

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Can anyone tell me why my doctor determined my total cholesterol and LDL
amounts from a test taken about six hours after I had breakfast?

I thought the fasting time was overnight.  Is there a very small difference
in results between a six hour and a fourteen hour fast?

Dear John

When you donate a unit of blood, your haemoglobin level drops by around
1 g/dl. As you sound like a pretty fit, healthy individual it’s unlikely
that this would have caused you any untoward adverse effects (the
adaptation to acute blood loss is to simply increase cardiac output). The
suggested delay of 5 hours post-donation is to allow time for your plasma
volume to recover; the time required to make new RBCs is obviously a bit
longer (days rather than hours).

The suggested time between donations (6 months in the UK) is usually more
to do with logistics than anything else; in fact, you can donate up to 3
units of blood in as many weeks if you want to donate your own blood
before surgery, for example (provided you are not anaemic to start off
with though).

Hope my simplistic explanation helps. Obviously, if you were an anaemic
geriatric with cardiac disease then your apparent decrease in aerobic
capacity might have been easier to explain!!

Short term cardiomyopathy

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

I’m a 33-year old male.  In March I was diagnosed to have idiopathic cardiomyopathy
after an echocardiogram indicated insufficient heart contractions (I think I heard the
phrase: "40 percent ejection").  It was considered to be a fairly mild case, basically
symptomlesss.  I was placed on a vasodialator–I don’t recall the name–and was told I
should basically abstain from alcohol for the rest of my life and should start an
excercise program.  Last week I had a followup echo and my heart appeared absolutely
normal.  What could cause this sort of muscle damage for such a short time?  Is it still
critical to avoid alcohol?  What are the chances I will have future problems?
