The newspapers today reported that Carl Perkins underwent a successful
carotid angioplasty. Does anyone out there have any information on this
procedure. Do they actually push a catheter into the carotid artery and
inflate a balloon? Sounds risky to me.

Carotid angioplasty has been studied by national registry and is currently
undergoing a trial with combined PTA and stenting. Angioplasty alone seems
to have a higher complication rate then carotid endarterectomy. The hope
is that a stent will provide a lower embolic rate combined with a low
restenosis rate. IT is only a hope, but the trial is well underway.
