For the past month or two, I’ve been getting PAC’s and occasional
superventricular tachycardia. Oddly enough, it happens only when I drink
any liquid. Following a 24 hour holter monitor, my doctor said that
these symptoms are benign. However, he offered to put me on a beta
blocker. I declined for the time being, as long as the symptoms are
benign. I’m not anxious to start medication unless absolutely necessary.
I’d be interested in feedback about the situation and other suggestions
for treatment.

Mark,
PAC’s are harmless by themselves though later on other arrythmias may
crop up. SVT isn’t going to do you any harm if the rate isn’t
unreasonable, isn’t sustained, and your head stays clear. Myself, if I
wasn’t getting dizzy, my eyesight was staying clear, and I was having no
breathing problems, I’d avoid the drugs. There’s no drug that will help
the PAC’s and Beta Blockers sometimes have worse side effects than the
rhythm you’re seeking to get rid of. -Rod-

I was on a holter monitor late last fall. Basically it showed I have an extra
heartbeat and that my heart rate occasionally speeds up for no more than a
minute. The doctor told me that he would not recommend any meds for this
since I was not passing out from it and that the meds could often cause more
problems that the conditon. I suffer from Cardiomyopathy.

> -Mark-Mark, I have the same condition as you, and I was very hesitant about
the meds because of the side effects. But, my cardiologist gave me a
prescription for Sectral. I have had absolutely no side effects from
it. You should discuss it with your doctor to see if it is right for
you.
